Industry
Multi-store IT where a billing counter down for an hour is revenue gone, not deferred.
The context
Retail is unforgiving in a way office IT is not. If a billing counter is down at 7 pm on a Saturday, that revenue does not arrive later — the customer leaves. Every design decision we make for retail clients follows from that.
It shapes the specifics: dual-ISP failover so a broadband outage does not close the store, buffer hardware held locally rather than shipped from a warehouse, network segmentation that keeps guest Wi-Fi away from payment systems, and surveillance designed for shrinkage investigation and dispute resolution rather than for the look of the thing.
The constraints
Generic IT advice fails here for specific reasons. These are the ones that change the design.
A POS outage during peak trading is unrecoverable. Recovery time matters more than almost any other metric.
Store staff cannot troubleshoot. Anything requiring local expertise will fail; remote resolution and simple swap procedures are the only reliable options.
Footage needs to be good enough to identify a person and be shown to them. Motion-blur at the till achieves nothing.
Guest Wi-Fi, staff devices and payment terminals sharing one flat network is both a breach route and a compliance problem.
Twenty stores each configured slightly differently means twenty different failure modes and no reusable fix.
Our approach
Specific design decisions, not principles. This is what actually changes in a deployment for this sector.
One documented template — network, POS, cameras, Wi-Fi, UPS — deployed identically at every location, so a fix at one store applies everywhere.
Primary broadband with a 4G or secondary link that takes over without staff intervention. The store keeps trading.
Buffer units at regional level, and procedures written so a store manager can complete a swap over the phone.
Till, entrance, stockroom door and high-value fixtures covered at identification resolution, with retention set to your loss-prevention policy.
Payment, corporate, surveillance and guest traffic on separate VLANs at every store, no exceptions.
A typical engagement
Stores had been fitted out by whichever local vendor was available at the time. No two networks matched, cameras were a mix of four brands with retention between 4 and 40 days, and the head-office team spent most of its week on store firefighting. We audited every site, defined one standard build, and rolled it out store by store over four months without closing a single location during trading hours.
Client details are withheld deliberately. We do not publish client names or site specifics without written permission — particularly for security work, where publishing what we installed and where would be indefensible.
Full capability
Most clients in this sector start with the pillars above and add others as the estate consolidates.
